The Next Morning

Your dreams that night are none too clear when you awake. All you can remember is seeing yourself running, running away in the woods. You never knew these little foresty parts on the sides of highways had names, less inhabitants! But here you are, in East Fresia. You and the other travelers are in the main room; the sun is just rising and you are lying on the floor. They gave you scratchy wool blankets to sleep on, yours of an old faded blue that smells of clean linens. You pull it closer to your chest as you lie there, still wondering what you've gotten yourself into ... until your thoughts are interrupted by a sharp kick in the back. You turn over, to see the larger dwarf, whom you seem to remember as Waddle standing over you.

"Ain't you up yet?" he says, chewing on a stalk of wheat. You narrow your eyes at him and look around the room.

"Well it doesn't look like anyone else is," you say, seeing that everyone else is asleep.

"Heh, I know," he laughs, "just askin'. And since ye're talkin' to me, y'must be up. And since y'already up, ain't no sense in ye goin' back to sleep. Hey e'rebody!" he shouts. "Get on up!"

The others mumble and groan as they all sit up and stretch. The little girl elf and one of the dwarf brothers look at each other, and each one springs up and darts out of the room.

"Oh, those two," says one of the older dwarfs. "Sometimes I think about building an underground toilet, just to keep them from racing for the privy like that." You nod your head, still very confused about the entire situation. "I'm Piddle," he says as he lights up a pipe with a match struck on the floorboards. The thinner red-headed one, who you believe is Ginny, walks to the window and sniffs.

"Ay, 'tis a fine day for traveling," he says. "I don't believe there'll be a drop of rain."

"Ginny's our little weather man," whispers Piddle. You still do no more than nod. There are so many questions you want to ask, and so much you still want to know! You are about to ask when a very distraught Kella returns pouting to the den, and sits next to you.

"Kella," says Piddle, "you and Noodle fight every morning, and every morning you lose, and you sob just like a little girl." She seems unfazed by Piddle's scolding and scoots closer to you, leaning on you and letting out a heavy sigh. "She's such a baby," says Piddle, half to you, half to Kella. You almost feel sorry for her; she is much smaller than the others, and must be bullied around a lot. Then, the smell of breakfast hits you; you can't tell what it is, but it smells very good. The others perk up their heads, smelling it too, and the dwarf you're pretty sure is Noodle walks nonchalantly back into the den, after which Kella sprints out of the door.

"Hey, Justin, my main man! What's shakin', brother?" he says, extending you a hi-five. You reluctantly return his gestures, and he gives you a funny little wink and walks into the middle of the room. "Smells like goose eggs to me!" he says patting his little dwarf belly.

"Mmm, I thought that's what I smelled. I trust you've met Noodle?" says Piddle. You nod slowly, as you've done all morning. Piddle and Noodle converse with each other, and you start thinking again, first about goose eggs. You've never had goose eggs! Well, there's a lot of things you've never experienced until recently. Goose eggs should be the least of your worries, I mean come on, these are elves and dwarves and leprechauns here! You're still finding it hard to believe. But, no time to worry about that now!

"Goose eggs n' meerfawn!" bellows the voice of Waddle. Piddle and Noodle walk out still chatting, and Ginny follows after finally leaving his spot at the window. You follow them into the kitchen, and sit in the remaining spot between Kella, who was already there waiting there with her hair still dripping wet and smelling like lilac, and Noodle to your left. The table has already been set, and Waddle enters with two plates, one stacked with goose eggs, the other with what you presume to be meerfawn. He serves you last, and then leans in.

"Ye ever eat meerfawn 'afore?" he whispers. Of course not, you don't even know what that is, so you shake your head no. "Well, then, it's about time y'did!" he hollers. "Tastes just like chicken," he says, smacking you on the back and sitting down on the other side of Noodle. You look around, and notice that there is no sign of Nescent anywhere. The others sure seem to be enjoying their meal, so you decide to try it. You cut off a tiny bit of goose egg to start with. You find that it's much similar to the eggs you're used to, only a bit stronger in flavor and has obviously been heavily seasoned and fried in butter. You were always too lazy to do anything special with eggs, so this is a very welcome change. Then, you look at the slab of meerfawn. It sort of resembles steak, only darker in color. You take a tiny bite, and to your surprise, it's quite good. You take your time at first, and then seeing that everyone else is scarfing it all down, you figure 'when in Rome', and do the same.

After breakfast, Ginny returns to the window and is again staring in a daze to the sky. Kella and Noodle are sitting on the bear rug enthralled in what appears to be a very competitive card game, and Waddle is munching an apple and reading the newspaper.

"Would you like to go for a walk with me?" asks Piddle.
