Waiting Out the Storm

The wound continues to bleed, so you clean and bandage it as best you can while Eric tries not to snivel. Once you are finished, you try to determine from Eric whether it was the wolf that attacked him.

Your friend shrugs. "It may have been a wolf. It may have been anything. I just saw something furry with four legs and a lot of blood . . . mine." His eyes roll back in his head, and he loses consciousness. Without much thought, you move him to the sofa and then attempt to call for an ambulance.

Unfortunately, the telephone no longer is working at all, so you can do nothing but wait for him to regain consciousness. Before long, it becomes evident that he is asleep, so you prepare yourself a sandwich and a cup of tea. For hours, nothing happens. Eric remains asleep, and no one enters or exits the house. Occasionally, the cry of a dog or wolf follows a thunderclap, but both noisemakers seem very distant.
