Back to School

“Training” is hardly the word for what follows. “Advanced Boot Camp” would be a more apt description. The training facilities are located on a remote tropical island, no doubt to keep it hidden from the rest of the world. There you (and nearly a hundred other overseers-in-training) are subjected to a grueling regimen of study and exercise, designed to hone your physical and mental abilities to their absolute peak--assuming it doesn’t kill you first.

Your classmates, like yourself, are all changelings, beings with the ability to alter their form at will. However, each one seems to have a preferred form, and you quickly hook up with the half dozen or so other dragonoids on campus. Most of them have been in training for over a year, and you pick up a great deal of valuable information from them. It’s a bit like being in a fraternity, you think.

There is little time for socializing, however, as your training begins in earnest almost immediately upon your arrival. An overseer, it seems, must be knowledgeable about virtually everything. The curriculum includes mathematics, science (pure and applied), languages, history, medicine and law. At first it all seems overwhelming, but, fortunately for you, becoming a dragon has strengthened your mind as well as your body. You are soon soaking up information with a speed and clarity you never thought possible.

Then there is your physical training. In addition to intense physical conditioning, there are courses in weaponry and the various forms of hand-to-hand combat. There are also specialized courses geared toward particular species. The dragonoids, for example, study the arts of flying and fire breathing. You are especially fond of the flying class, even though the instructor seems to delight in driving his students to the brink of exhaustion.

Another favorite course is a lecture series called Case Studies. Here, experienced overseers share their stories with the students. Most of these stories are inspiring tales of triumph over adversity, but occasionally there are sobering tales of missions that went tragically wrong. The life of an overseer, the instructors remind you constantly, is not an easy one.

Thankfully, it is not “all work and no play” for the students. From time to time, you and your classmates are rewarded with extended holidays to enjoy the pleasures of the island. You usually spend these periods cavorting merrily with your dragonoid companions.

With so many activities occupying your attention, the years seem to fly by. Before you know it, it is Graduation Day. Standing before the assembled student body and faculty, you and the other graduates each receive a glittering silver medallion, identifying you as Children of Sakuul. It is the proudest, and yet the most humbling, moment of your life.

After the ceremony, you are met by the same hooded figure who brought you to the island. “How do you feel, my young overseer?” he asks with a smile.

“Like I could take on the world!” you answer with a toothy grin. And why not? You are a strapping young dragon, highly educated and phenomenally strong. What could possibly stand in your way? In a fit of youthful exuberance, you flex your gargantuan muscles, splitting your graduation gown from top to bottom.

“That is good,” the hooded figure responds solemnly. “Because it is time for your first assignment.”
