"I think you have to take them back" you tell him "They clearly have a curse on them. If we return them to their rightful owners..."

"I clearly saw a cutlass and the remains of a pirate flag on the ship" interrupts Fred

"OK, so they're not the rightful owners, but they are the ones to which the curse applies. All right, I'll return them. But you have to help me. I don't have opposable thumbs anymore"
