From Bad to Worse

Your thoughts are interrupted by another boy in a baseball jacket. He looks in the direction of your new acquaintance and shouts, "Hey, Jason, what's up?"

Well, now you know Jason's name . . . but Jason doesn't seem to be listening. His eyes are glazed over, and he seems to be smiling at something behind you.

The boy in the baseball jacket persists. "Jason!" he shouts again, waving his arms.

His eyes fixed in your direction, Jason raises a hand. "Take a whiff," he tells his friend.

The friend sniffs at the air and stiffens. He takes a step towards you and sniffs again, then grabs your arm! "It's not possible," he remarks.

You both look back at Jason, whose mouth is now open to display long, sharp teeth and a leathery pink tongue. He says nothing but nods at his friend, as if signaling that luncheon is about to be served.

His nose still in motion, the other boy lets go of you for a minute to slip off his jacket. Already, his ears are again somewhat pointed, and sideburns are growing where there were none seconds ago. You need no further incentive to make a mad dash for the exit. You enter an empty corridor, and using all your breath, you race down it in search of some hiding place, if not a door leading away from the building. You hope this is just a nightmare, but you can't afford to take the chance it's not.
