They sang in English earlier, so it's a safe bet that they will understand you, you reason. "I'm new here. Pardon my appearance." The Lord High Executioner asks you querulously, "So you aren't the emissary for the Mikado?" You reply in the negative, and Lord High Executioner relaxes visibly. The Lord High Executioner cheerfully says, "My name is Koko, and I wish to apologize for our rude behaviour. We've been rather anxious as of late, as there have been rumors of a visit from the Mikado. Anything I can do to make it up to you? Lop off somebody's head? Alter a suit?"
You are about to explain the circumstances of your arrival when you are interrupted by the entrance of several young ladies, roughly eighteen in age, all wearing extremely colorful kimonos. All attention turns to them as three step forward and sing a cheerful trio. It gets a triple encore. There is a good deal of rejoicing (the maids have just gotten out of school), and one of them kisses Koko. "We're engaged," explains Koko. Another of maidens steps forward and pokes you curiously in the side. "What's this?", she asks Koko. "Well," says Koko, "I'm not quite sure. Perhaps he can explain." You begin to speak, but the maid jumps back in alarm. "Oh! It's alive!" You feel somewhat insulted.
