Power of the High Priest

Since both Dragons have equal Atk, attacking is pointless, so you end your turn. Marik reveals one of Ra's special abilities: the ability to destroy any one monster on his command. Normally it costs 1000 LP to use, but due to the nature of the duel, here it is free. He uses this ability to destroy the Ultimate Dragon with Ra. He then proceeds to wage a direct attack, but fortunately you have your trap card Negate Attack, which blocks Ra's attack by ending the Battle Phase.

You concentrate...and draw the card Pot of Avarice. Upon playing it, it shuffles the bottom 5 monsters in your Graveyard back into the deck, then lets you draw 2 more cards, which turn out to be Fiend Sanctuary and Megamorph. You lay the Fiend Sanctuary face down and end the turn. Fiend Sanctyuary, when activated, summons a 0/0 monster token to the field in Attack mode. Thing is, the damage inflicted on the token is instead done to the opponent.

Marik attacks directly with Ra, but you activate the Instant Magic of Fiend Sanctuary. Ra hits the token and Marik takes 4500 points of damage, bringing him down to 3500. He angrily ends his turn, and you make your move, drawing Monster Reborn. You use this card to revive the Ultimate Dragon, then play Megamorph on Ra. Since Marik's LP are lower than yours (3500 to 3800), Ra's Attack is cut in half (total of 2250). You use the Ultimate Dragon to destroy Ra. Marik's LP go down to 1250, but still he chuckles evilly.

On Marik's turn, he simply plays a defensive monster, which you obliterate with the Ultimate Dragon (after laying a card face down). He then summons another defensive monster, and you destroy that one too.

On his next turn, however, Marik plays Monster Reborn and revives Ra (its attack points are 2250, the same power it had when it was destroyed), and once again destroys the Ultimate Dragon with its ability. He then attacks directly once more. If this were a regular duel, you would be able to survive Ra's attack, but you realize that, as before, you will take twice as much damage as usual. Therefore, you activate your trap, Nutrient Z. It can be activated whenever you take at least 2000 damage, and it increases your LP by 4000 before any damage is done. Thanks to Nutrient Z, you are able to survive at 3300 LP (3800 + 4000 - 2250*2). Marik lays a monster in defense mode, then activates Double Spell, discarding 1 Magic card to return Monster Reborn to his hand. You wonder why until he ends his turn. Ra returns to the graveyard - Only affected by Magic for 1 turn.

You have 1 card in your hand (De-Fusion). You know you have to defeat Marik soon, you're quickly running out of cards to revive the Ultimate Dragon. You draw - and see the best possible card you could have drawn: Premature Burial. You use it to revive the Ultimate Dragon, then use De-Fusion, to split the Ultimate Dragon back into the 2 Blue-Eyes White Dragons and Versago -- or you would, had Versago not been returned to the deck by Pot of Avarice. As it is, only the two Blue-Eyes appear. You use the first to destroy Marik's defensive monster, and the second to attack directly. Marik is defeated.

Marik's form dissolves away, leaving the unconcious form of your friend -- and the Millennium Rod. You walk over to it and pick it up.

"Congratulations." you hear a deep, calm voice say. But it is as though the voice is inside your head. You demand to know who it is, and the voice chuckles. "I am the spirit of the High Priest Seto. You have defeated Marik, and more importantly, commanded the White Dragon with astounding skill. This shows me that you are my successor."

"Wait," you say. "I thought Kaiba was your successor?"

"He was," answers the High Priest, "but when he refused to believe in it I had to look for the next one down. Which is you, judging by your skilled handling of the White Dragon.

"The Pharoah Atem wasn't the only one to be sealed in his Item. The Thief King - Bakura - was sealed in the Millennium Ring, and I was sealed in the Millennium Rod. After the final and ceremonial battles, Atem went off to the afterlife, but Bakura did not. That's why I'm here: to stop Bakura from making a second comeback. But I need to establish a link to this world through my successor, just as Atem did."
