That's What Friends Are For

"Well," you figure, "anyone can have a faulty connection."

You redial Eric's number, and he answers right away. "Sorry about that," he says. "I must have leaned wrong. Anyhow, what were you saying about a strange house?"

You offer a synopsis of the night's events, and Eric laughs. "You sure get into some odd situations," he marvels. "Would you like me to come over until the police arrive?"

His remark puzzles you. "Police?" you query. "I didn't call the police."

Eric is incredulous. "You mean to tell me that you're hiding in a stranger's house without permission, and you didn't even call the police on arrival? That's messed up."

You grumble, knowing deep down that Eric is right. You murmur a nonsensical excuse.

"Well," groans Eric, "Samantha has to work tonight, so I have nothing to lose by coming over to make sure that the coast is clear. If I do that, will you please leave?" You promise to do precisely that, and Eric hangs up.
