Scatterbrained

"Why not?" you ask, and he leads you down the hall.

"This is the coat closet," he tells you, pawing at a set of double doors. You nod, scratching behind your ear at the same time. You shouldn't have tried that new shampoo that was on sale.

Fred moves further down the hall. "This is one of two entrances to the dining room," he announces. The other leads in from the kitchen, where we'll go in a minute. Hungry?"

You nod again. You realize that you haven't had anything to eat since lunch, and you could really go for a thick, juicy steak. "You're not a vegetarian, are you?" you ask, only to realize how stupid your question is. Fred dismisses the question with a smile and continues.

"This is my bedroom," he says, gesturing to the large room at the end of the hall. "When I was married, I called it the master bedroom. Now it's just where I crash at night. While bachelorhood has its advantages, I hate it that Andrea didn't give things time to work out." He looks down, and you feel sorry for him at once. You nearly pat him on the head but decide that would be insulting.
