Dreamwalking

You climb into bed, which is a lot larger then you remember it being, and try to get comfortable. It's been a long, terrifying and weird day, and you want to just pass out and get some rest. You close your eyes... and wait... and wait... and wait. You roll over and put a pillow between your legs. You try your stomach, your back. You turn around, try sideways, and lay on the pillow. Nothing. You are comfortable, but... you're not tired. Well, mentally you've been through a lot. Are you stressed? No, it doesn't feel like that. It's like your mind just isn't shutting down the way it does. You should at least feel drowsy, but you don't. Kind of like your hunger, it just simply isn't there anymore. Do demons just not sleep either? After a few hours on no headway, you suppose not, and get up again, walking downstairs.

You hear Albert snoring on the couch, sprawled out halfway under a blanket. You walk over and adjust it, not wanting him to get cold. Then you smell something, and register it as that extra sense of yours. It reminds you of steak, meaty and juicy. It's coming from Albert, and realize he must be dreaming of something, since he is asleep. You close your eyes and soak it in, sitting down on the coffee table, not having much else to do if you can't sleep.

As you do, something starts to form in your mind. At first it's just a blur, but as you drink in the sensation, it starts to focus, and you recognize the inside of the jungle gym, with Albert at the bench doing his set. You open your eyes, and find yourself back in Fred's house, that smell still strong. Did you just... look into Albert's dreams?

This is interesting. You close your eyes again, once again letting the smell wash over you, and sure enough, the gym begins to come into focus again. Albert is hard at work, lifting what you believe is twice the amount you've ever seen anyone lift. Then you here a murmur, muffled sounds that slowly begin to form into cohesiveness.

"Hey Tiny," comes a voice, and the image shifts with Albert's perspective, and you gawk as you see a giraffe, twice as tall as Albert and twice as wide with muscle. "Why are you even here?" he says, in a bullying tone, "You'll never catch up with anyone else, so why are you bothering?"

"I will get there!" says Albert. Pumping harder. "You'll see, I'll be stronger and bigger then all of you!"

"The only time you were bigger then anyone was in high school. Remember? Scalebreaker?" Laughs the giraffe, Suddenly Albert looks younger, but much bigger, a huge rolling stomach instead of the six pack you know him for, "S-shut u-up," comes his younger voice, stuttering, but shadowed faces fade into view as the Giraffe yells, "Scalebreaker, scalebreaker!" which the faces echo. Albert is still trying to lift the weights, but now he starts to falter, and you see his stomach start to swell bigger as he is mocked, and Albert sweats bullets looking more and more distraught.

You can't bear it, "Hey leave Albert alone!"

The voice echo's into the dream, and suddenly you see Fred standing there, and the giraffe turns. "Who are you? Seriously, I thought Albert is tiny, your just nothing."

You are a little shocked, you don't know what you did, are you changing Albert's dream? Well, better roll with it. "All you are is a big jerk!" you say, and find that the dream version of Fred is parroting what you say. "So what if Albert isn't as big a muscle house as you, he's got ten times the heart and ten times the brains!"

As the dream Fred says this, you can swear you see the giraffes head and neck seem to shrink slightly.

"And even if Albert were fat, he'd still be a better person then you could ever be!" You continue, and see Albert looking up from the bench at dream Fred, sitting up, his belly sagging over his knees. "Albert is stronger then you already in every way that counts, all you have is your muscles, and all that is just an excuse for all your hot air!"

You see the young Albert seem to age back to his normal self, all the flab turning back to his toned self, while suddenly there is a small pop from the giraffe, and there is a sound of escaping air, and the giraffe starts to shrink, not only in height, but in muscle. Soon he is shorter then Albert, all muscle tone gone, leaving a skinny weakling behind.

Albert looks at Fred, "Thanks buddy," he says. "No one's really stood up for me like that before. Everyone always laughed at me for my weight."

"None of that matters Albert," you say through Fred, "Not to your friends."

Albert smiles and suddenly the image starts to fade, and you find yourself back in Fred's house.

You blink a couple of times and look out the window, seeing the sun starting to rise. Albert is still in front of you, but you see him starting to stir. You guess the dream is over. Not wanting to look creepy, you quickly move to the kitchen, as if you were already up and looking at making breakfast. Albert yawns and stretches, rubbing his eyes.

You get out a few bowls and say, "Morning!" Albert looks over to you, "Oh, sorry, I couldn't sleep, so I thought I would try making breakfast for you all. I mean, I know I can't eat, but, maybe I can help out?"

Albert gets up and walks over. "Here, I'll help you," he says, and opens the cupboard, pulling out a few boxes of cereal. You open the fridge and grab the milk, turning around just in time to see Albert pouring a big bowl of cocao noms with sugar frosted marshmallows. You almost drop the milk. Albert had always gone for whole grain shredded wheat blocks. If he even had cereal instead of eggs and a protein shake.

"Um... are you feeling ok?" you ask, taking the milk to the table and looking intently at Albert.

"Yeah," says Albert, returning your stare, "Actually I feel great." He says, pouring the milk and taking a big bite of the cereal. "Hey, this stuff is really good!" he says surprised. You feel a bit worried, did you accidentally do something by messing with his dream?

"I guess I feel like a weights been lifted, you know?" he says. He then looks at you, and checks to see if Fred is up. "Between you and me," he whispers "I had a dream last night. I mean, it's a dream I usually have, a high school bully who used to tease me, but tonight, Fred was there, and he went off on him, you should have seen it!"

"Really?" you ask, trying to look naïve.

"Yeah, but it's like... a revelation or something, I feel so much better, like, that bully doesn't really matter, because I got you guys." He says, "And, I don't know, it makes me feel a lot better about myself or something." He takes another spoonful of the cereal, and you feel a bit relieved. It sounds like you unloaded some sort of emotion baggage he was carrying around, that should be ok, right? You remember when the demon used his powers on Albert, how it was his muscles and size that were affected. Maybe this was why Albert was so obsessed with it, so maybe this is good for him in the long run, you may be running into that demon again, so removing the thing that he took advantage of last time will give him an advantage...
