Suddenly, even as the partygoers are beginning to laugh nervously at the sight of a hippo covered in potato salad, the floor beneath you begins to creak ominously.
Oh, no, you think in sudden desperation. I just had to live in a building with a basement.
You could probably try to find a stronger spot on the floor, but moving around might frighten the people even more.
You could try lying down, to take the weight off your feet and spread it out more. That might at least keep you from falling through to the basement.
Or, of course, you can keep thinking about this while the floor gives way ...
