A Close Encounter

One evening, you awaken feeling like some Hollywood playboy, not having a care in the world and living simply as you see fit from one day to the next. You stretch, put on your rags, and trot down the hall. It is summer and not quite dark yet, so you decide to wait in the library before slipping out for someone to eat. Much to your surprise, however, a peasant stands there before you, face down in a leatherbound book.

You try to sneak up on him, but you step on a loose board, immediately distracting him from his reading. "Oh, hello!" he shouts, nervously. He moves away from a bookcase to the side of the large table opposite you. "Who are you?" he asks, his voice unsteady.

You smile. "I'm a friend of the . . . uh, the countess," you stammer, unsure exactly what her title is. You look down at your clothes and fear that they will convey otherwise. "I just got up," you add as an afterthought, before considering that it is twilight.

"I'm a friend of the countess, too," replies the peasant. "I just came to return a book, and I really must be going, now. The countryside can be dangerous at night."

You are not about to let this ruffian escape. "Hey, would you like some company? It's less dangerous when you're not alone."
