Up: Game 3  Up: Game 3 Outline

Why are the scientists always so mad?

Just as you try to correct your flight in order to avoid the huge airplane headed toward you, a large mechanical arm pops out from the top of the flying craft. You notice that on the end of this arm is an odd metal container of some kind. The next thing you know, a slot on the side of this object opens, and in a flash the container comes toward you and a pair of mechanical arms pull you into it. You try to fly out of the strange machine, but as the arms let you go, the slot you came through closes, leaving you in darkness. You hear the sound of metal grating against metal, and start to bump off the walls, as the container starts moving, presumably, back into the plane. You wonder why the flames coming off your wings aren’t doing anything to melt this prison. Suddenly the grating stops, and you land, slightly bruised, on the floor. Then a pair of blood red eyes stare at you.

“Amazing.” A voice, seemingly belonging the eyes, comments. “I came to this area to catch a dragon, and behold! Instead a far grander treasure is mine. The powerful phoenix!” Just as the eyes were about to continue their monologue, the lights are turned on allowing you to see your surroundings. You are inside the airplane, in a large glass case. You think about trying to break free, but remember that the voice said that he meant to catch a dragon, so this whole craft was probably fireproof. As you look around the room, you see several more glass cases of different sizes, though only two of them have living creatures inside them, one holding a troll, the other a fairy. There are also a few pieces of furniture around the room, and then you notice the “red eyed creature,” a brown-eyed human wearing an odd piece of headgear with two red light bulbs on top.

“Lawrence!” The man with the headgear shouts as a silver human-like robot and a man dressed like a stereotypical butler, holding a feather duster, enter the room. “You just killed the drama of my monologue by turning on the lights and revealing my identity!”

“Sorry doctor, but I thought that I’d ask you if you might like some tea and as I can’t see in the dark I decided to turn on the lights.” The butler said.

Getting tired of all this irrelevant chatter, you decide to speak up. “Excuse me, but I’d like to know who you are and why you captured me.”

“Well, what do you know? The doc’s new parrot can talk.” The robot said unenthusiastically.

“Of course I can talk!” You respond, offended “And I’m not a parrot, I’m a phoenix.”

“Oh my goodness.” The android replies sarcastically. “I never would’ve guessed that, in spite of the fact that you have fire practically oozing down your back, and the fact that you’re nearly twice the size of a human being.”

“Quite unit five forty-three.” The man with the headgear says. “We don’t our guest to think badly of us.”

“In that case I should keep talking. You’re always the one scaring our guests away.”

The man with the headgear sighs. “Why did I give five forty-three the sarcastic AI? Anyway my phoenix, I am doctor Fury, and I am capturing an army of mythical animals to help me rule the land of the ‘Yet to be Named Kingdom!’”

“The ‘Yet to be Named Kingdom?’” You ask.

“Yes, the locals are having a hard time choosing what to call the place. But that is beside the point, because soon I shall rule it, and it shall be called… Otisburg!” Otisburg? You think. This guy really is a loon.

“And we all know how that’ll turn out.” The android added. “Considering how much thought went into your plan, I estimate your chances of success twenty thousand, three hundred and thirteen, to one. You’re plan has so many flaws doc! First of all, mad scientists do not easily persuade Mythic creatures. Second, even if you can convince these creatures to join you, some random protagonist, who will no doubt be part of some prophecy or what have you, and inevitably destroy you. Third, when you go for the cliché ‘name the land you conquer after yourself’ you didn’t even give it your name.” Though the butler says nothing you can tell he agrees with the robot.

“I’ve already made up my mind foolish robot! Don’t confuse me with the facts.” Fury said, storming out of the room.

What a day. You think. First I get sucked into some weird portal, find a lamp, accidentally anger a djinn, walk through some weird door, fall from the sky into another dimension, get turned into a phoenix, and get captured by some nut.

Seeing how you can’t get out of your situation, you decide to kill time and strike up conversation with one of the characters in the room.
