Always around when you DON'T need them, never when you do...

Thinking this is a simple one, you just go open the door and your wonderful day will continue. till bedtime...

The wolf turns, looking down the street. "Oh oh." "What?" you answer, leaning out over him to see. "It's the police, I ran past them earlier but I didn't think they saw me."

"Well. they won't be as understanding as most; they like to shoot wild animals in the city", you say, opening the door quickly. "Get inside till they're gone!" Just as you slide the groceries in, a spotlight shines on the doorway; you cover your eyes, hoping they didn't see the wolf...

The car stops. "Come here; we'd like to talk for a sec."

"All right, officer," you say with forced calm, closing the door as you walk away and out to the cruiser. "Yes, officer? Is there a problem?"

"Possibly. We're looking for a very large dog reported to have attacked a resident nearby... black in color, very big, possibly a wolf hybrid" "You haven't seen anything tonight, have you?", another voice says; you lean over to see the second officer in the passenger seat, shotgun resting on a shoulder.

"No, officers; I just got home... Is it dangerous? Is the person alright?" "Hasn't been found... we think the animal dragged the body away..." A lump forms in your throught; you try hard not to choke, but somehow you feel as if this isn't right...

"So you haven't seen anything at all tonight?", the officer continues, looking at you closely. "No; as i said, I just got home." "Well, get inside and lock your doors. This isn't the first animal attack; there's been several in the past few days." "Yes, officers, I will; thank you." you say, and the cruiser smoothly pulls away into the night.

You stare at the car, until the taillights vanish around a corner. This isn't right, you muse; they were lying... if the wolf had wanted to he would have killed me instantly...

As you walk back into the house, you find the wolf sitting in front of the TV, paw on the remote. The news is on. "The police say you're a killer; are you?", you say. "Of course not," the wolf responds indignantly. "But I think I have an idea as to what happened to me... and from the looks of things," as he flips his head at the TV, "I'm not the only one who got a fur coat for Christmas early this year.

On the screen, a wolf is being netted; in the background, you can just glimpse another wolf being shot, as a crowd of terrified people stand by watching. "These two make over fifty wolves found inside the city tonight," the anchor says; "and reports are still coming in. We've even received a few calls insisting that the wolves are talking..." The anchor shakes his head. "Well, needless to say, the police advise that residents stay in their homes and lock their doors until this bizarre situation has been resolved. And remember, if you see a wolf, it should be considered extremely dangerous. Back away slowly, and get to a phone as soon as possible. Don't make any loud sounds or sudden moves; that could antagonize--" The screen abruptly goes black as the wolf paws the 'power' button.

"This is too much," the wolf says, pacing back and forth in agitation; "they haven't even given anyone who's changed a chance!" "I see that," you reply; "you'd better stay here until we figure out what's going on." "Right."
