Up: Game 2  Up: Game 2 Outline

She might well pass for forty-three, in the dusk, with the light behind her!

Koko turns pale. "You know what this means, don't you? The Mikado will be offended! He'll reduce our status to that of village!" His terrified rambling is interrupted, however, by the sound of a gong. A parade of nobles and warriors, elegantly dressed, enters, singing. After a few incomprehensible verses, two figures step forward from their position at the back of the parade. One is a stout, grim man, and the other is an elderly woman. The man is fully attired in regal robes, indicating that he is clearly the Mikado. The woman seems to also be of high rank, and has an imperious air about her. Despite her age (and repulsiveness), she walks with all of the confidence of youth. Koko turns to you, and says, "The Mikado is the least of our problems! He's brought (gulp) Katisha!"

(Lyrics by W.S. Gilbert. Music available at Gilbert and Sullivan MIDI Archive)

Mikado: "From ev'ry kind of man obedience I expect! I'm the Emperor of Japan..."

Katisha cuts him off. "And I'm his daughter-in-law elect! As tough as a bone, with a will of her own, is his daughter-in-law elect!"

The Mikado looks exasperated, and continues.

Mikado: "My morals have been declared particularly correct!"

Katisha: "But they're nothing at all compared with those of his daughter-in-law elect! Bow, bow, to his daughter-in-law elect!"

All: "Bow, bow, to his daughter-in-law elect!"

After a few more verses, the Mikado sings an incredibly sadistic (and rather amusing) song about the penalties he would like to impose on various social nuisances.

When the singing is over, Koko turns to you and says, "Brace yourself!" The Mikado looks at him, and says, "You haven't executed anybody yet, have you?" Koko gulps. "Well... technically... I've been sort of considering it..." Koko then crawls over to the Mikado and begins kissing his feet. The Mikado slowly turns in your direction and fixes his glaring eyes on you. "Is he always like this?"
