Up: Game 3  Up: Game 3 Outline

Years in the past...

"What do you mean, 400 years? We'll be dead by then!" Countess Bathory paces back and forth in front of her throne. "We need the bearer, NOW."

"Please, your highness. We need patience. Once the Bearer receives his mark, he will travel here and help us defeat the demon."

"How long until he arrives? We don't have much longer." The castle shakes with tremors, as if agreeing with her words.

"He should arrive within a few minutes - we should prepare."

The Countess nods. "Very well then. We wait."

Back to the present...

It seems that pillar actually did something - the glowing symbols in the room are changing colour. They're fading from a neon blue to a cherry-red. The pillars begin pulsing, and crackles of energy fly from each towards the centre of the circle. You watch in awe as the beams collide, forming some sort of spinning doorway. You move towards it cautiously, taking care not to walk into the beams. You stand before it and look through - it seems like some sort of throne room. You pass your hand through the shimmering surface, which ripples like water. You summon your courage, then step through the strange portal.

You find yourself in the throne room of some sort of castle. Red tapestries cover the walls, and a golden carpet leads up to an exgravagant throne. There's someone sitting in it. You walk towards the chair slowly, then kneel at the foot of the stairs. You know royalty when you see it. You hear the sweeping of robes, and a shadow falls over you. You look up carefully, and look into the face of Countess Bathory. You'd recognise her face anywhere - the myths about the castle always described her as beautiful, and the few that actually held images of her face were breathtaking. And now you're staring at the real thing.

"Rise, Bearer." her voice is like a melody - tinkling, like a spell. You remember that she was rumoured to be a witch, and attempt to fight. But there's nothing; she's not doing anything. You stand, and wait for her to speak again. "I presume you know why you are here." she says. You shake your head.

"Absolutely no idea, mam." god, that sounded impolite. The Countess doesn't seem to mind. She calls for someone standing behind the throne, who then comes forth. He introduces himself as Cyrus, then explains.

"We're under attack." Cyrus tells you. "It's an essentially indestructible demon, intent on the destruction of mankind."

"Then why am I here?" you ask. "I'm just a normal guy."

"Show me your right arm." Cyrus says. You extend your right arm, the one covered in those strange symbols. The Countess gasps, and you wonder what could possibly be so great about a burnt limb. Cyrus turns your hand palm up, and you realise the circular symbol has started glowing. All the while, Cyrus is muttering things like "ah, yes - i recognize that symbol - very promising..."

"Sorry, but could you just explain what the heck's going on?!" you're starting to get frustrated.

Cyrus raises his eyebrows, then smiles. "I'm sorry. This all must be very confusing for you." He leads you upstairs, to one of the many windows, then points outside. "What do you see?"

You look. There's nothing abnormal about the surroundings; just a whole lot of green hills, going on as far as the eye can see. Then the hills begin to ripple and move, and you realise that they're alive. "What is that?"

"Chaos."

"I'm sorry, what?"

"What you see out there is the essence of Chaos. It's the opposite of Order, which is what currently runs through your body."

You stare at him, dumbstruck. "I don't get it."

Cyrus points to the symbols on your arm. "These symbols represent order. Balance. You were chosen to fight Chaos."

"Why me?"

"Some call it Fate. Others call it Destiny. What bought you here?"

You shrug. "A donkey and some weird portal shit."

"Touche."
