or something similar. Interesting mental transformation follows the physical one. Will
probably be shelved in "literature" instead of sf/fantasy. -Ph

Description: + Saturation: 0. Phillip Wing, architect, is transformed into a
Chani, a leonine alien introduced in Planet of Whispers (not a transformation
book, but intriguing in its own right), as part of a commission to design a fitting tomb
for the Thearch of the Chani. As he develops his structure he also comes to accept himself
as being truly Chani, and gives up his human past. The transformation contains many good
insights into how it would feel to have your body become truly alien. -104 (98/02/06)

Significance: + Description: + Saturation: +. A series of interconnected
novellas about the Cage family over several generations and centuries, as advances in
biochemistry let anyone take any form they can imagine; among them, one person is
'twanked' to stay physically 12 years old; another becomes a dinosaur; one becomes a
spaceship; perhaps the most striking is the transformation into a living replica of the
Statue of Liberty. Portions were printed in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine; I
have the copies but have not looked for the original stories. -104 (98/02/06)

- [Result: VA.] A cop follows the wrong kind of
suspect into a dark alley, and is turned into a vampire. The last two thirds of this book
follow the hero as he tries to come to terms with his transformation and get revenge on
the woman who changed him. An enjoyable novel, half police procedural and half vampire
story. The author has a sense of humour and an eye for detail. -127

- Cause: NA? Result: PE/AN/BM?. The protagonist
of the short story is apparently part-leopard somehow, and this is key to the plot, with
at least a mental transformation (and possibly a physical one) at the end. I haven't read
the book yet, but I'm told it expands on this and has some further transformation. -Ph

- Result: LY Significance: 0. A classic werewolf
story, well-told, though rather short (128pp). I believe this was part of the basis for
the film "Silver Bullet," but
don't hold that against it; the screenplay for "Silver Bullet" is much better
than the actual movie too. -Ph
- First of all: I don't like Stephen King's novels, second: It has exactly the same plot
of most of his novels: child (disabled or with supernatural abilities) reveals the secret
of evil and successfully fights it. Here it is the werewolf, a killer without any soul,
not even recognizing he's cursed. He is just evil, nothing more. No horror, no thrill, no
suspense. Transformation: Thumb down. Rating: 1.
