almost every John Saul novel: A broken family moves from the city to the country-side --

the girl to switch places with a dolphin. It is very good. -162 (98/02/14)

- [Rating: 4 Cause: AS Result: BM.] Summary:
(partially from front dust cover flap) Harry Styles is thirty-siz years old; he has a wife
and three young children he loves. And he is dying of lung cancer. When Dr. Karl
Steienhardt asks him to volunteer for a revolutionary operation--his lungs to be replaced
by gills--he accepts with terror and pride, knowing that near the moment of his death he
will be making a mark on science. He lives--to find himself submerged in water, that water
now his only world, the element he must "breathe" to exist.
Personal Opinion: I read this long ago on a vacation. It was at the time when a 299 page
book as it is would take a kid like me weeks to read. I finished it in three days. It was
so riveting I spent hours each day reading nonstop. It is truly Science Fiction, very
believable. The details are immense and realistic. The book deals with technical aspects
of the gill lung replacement, the mental and physical condition of Harry, reactions of his
family and the staff that performed the surgery. Everything seems to have been taken into
consideration. Highly recommended. 4/4. -148 (98/02/11)

- This is a weird-ass book. Briefly, a doctor (perhaps mad, certainly obsessive and
paranoid) finds a way to revive dead people whose bodies aren't too badly damaged. The
catch is, the revivees have brand new personalities, new memories, everything. [...] For
experimental reasons most of the revivees aren't aware of their true nature, but many of
them come to suspect it. This forms a small but significant part of the story. Of course,
the reader is continually aware of just how weird these people are... [Result: PE.] Rating:

- Another weird-ass book. There's a war going on in Guatemala, and both sides (US vs.
Commies, that is to say Cubans, Nicaraguans, local insurgents) are developing psychically
powered special operatives. [...] The drug used to trigger psychic development is derived
from a traditional hallucinogen. [...] The story is really an odyssey by two defectors
from the psychic armies (one of ours, one of theirs). Rating: 5 Cause: AM Result: MP/TT Significance: 0

- This is a very good book. Shape-Changer's Wife is a fairy tale much like
something Peter Beagle might have
written. Aubrey, a young student of sorcery, goes to study with a wizard of great power
and dubious character, a specialist in shape-changing (both himself and others). It
develops that the shape-changer's wife and all his servants are transformed forest
creatures, all more or less miserable in human form. Not only do we get to hear what life
is like for the transformed, we get description of transformative magic and the mental
states necessary to perform it. As Aubrey masters the subject we get to see him go through
his own transformations. Rating: 3 Cause: MA/MC
