- Moderate complication: the events narrated in "Towards Kilimanjaro" [also by
Ian MacDonald, in the Stories section] show up as a diary in ES. ALso the
narrator of "TK" appears in ES and explains what happened after. Each
can be read alone, but "TK" has a definite sense of nonresolution.
The story in both reminds me of one of J.G. Ballard's "disaster" novels. An
alien object falls on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and begins to alter Earth's
biosphere. The transformations spread rapidly. People and animals who enter the
transformation zone (called the Chaga, after an indigenous tribe in the Kilimanjaro
region) are changed in profound, unpredictable, beautiful/grotesque ways. Changes are
primarily physical, but the consequent alteration of self-image has extensive
psychological consequences (for some). Rating: 4
