set on three different worlds, each of which has a different gender philosophy. (On one,

- I couldn't get into it at all. No rating. -11
- After an unsuccesful attempt at romance, the protagonist has a sex change operation to
become a woman, for reasons that are not at all clear to me (or to the protagonist).
Basically, (s)he is not a nice person, cannot get on with other people or empathise with
them at all, and the operation does nothing to resolve this basic problem. -77

squirrel-like creature transformed into a bird which is later transformed into a goat and
eventually changed back to the original form of an woman. Also a transformation of
the main character rogue Madmartigan, princess Sorsha, and an army into a herd of pigs by
an evil enchanting queen. Also a movie made in 1988 by LucasFilm. Transformations is not
the overriding theme, but plays a major part in the mythical world. The
transformation scenes in the movies are quite good and the pig transformation scene
portrays a forced transformation well. -167 (98/03/12)

- The protagonists change themselves into whales in order to save the world. Much better
than it sounds. -42
- Two different mechanics are used for the shapechanges, though that fact doesn't change
much in the plot. A fun story to read, but raises some very serious points too. -Ph

On all three of the above:
- [Cause: MA?/MC?/NA/SY Result: SC/BX/AN.]
- In all three books, characters can transform themselves and others, for both disguise
and offense, with the appropriate ability (there are three different mechanisms involved).
In Fire, one character (a fire elemental) is by nature able to take on any
form that pleases it. In Shadow and Sunset, another character
takes on a dying dragon as indweller ('mdaha'), and after some time is able to take the
shape of a dragon herself. -70

fantasy society presented here. The trilogy (closed-ended--rare these days!) follows
Wallie's search for why the transfer occurred and his explorations of the semiprimitive

but good characterizations and plotting make this an entertaining read. -88

- [Cause: AM Result: BX.] The set-up for this weird and
fascinating novel is that a carnival-owning couple decide that in order to make any money
in the business they're going to have to breed their own freaks. Which they do, with the
aid of "drugs, insecticides, arsenic, radioisotopes" etc. The story is mainly
about the kids coming of age in such a weird world. Other transformations involve a cult
in which initiates progressively amputate their limbs and a wealthy woman who gets her
kicks from permanently mutilating overly beautiful young women (so that they can be
evaluated by their brains rather than their bodies). Fascinating book but certainly
disturbing. -95

she's Dun Lady's Jess, a horse transformed into this new shape by a
malfunctioning spell that brought her and her rider, to whom she is utterly devoted, into
our world. Possessed now of human intelligence but still a horse deep inside, Jess
searches this world desparately for her master and rider--while a new, more human self
